The Masters of Public Health students of Edward & Cynthia Institute of Public Health and the faculty visited Lady Goschen Hospital, Mangaluru, on January 23, 2024, and were incredibly impressed by the dedication and expertise of the staff. Dr. Lekha OBG Specialist has oriented the team to know about the overall functioning of Lady Goschen Hospital under the guidance of Dr. Durga Prasad, Medical Superintendent of Lady Goshen Hospital, Mangalore.
The MPH students were actively engaged with the hospital team consisting of Mrs. Thresiyamma, Mrs. Ambika, and Mr. Jeethesh, and this firsthand exposure provided the MPH students with invaluable information about the maternal and child health services at the hospital, the various wards, the infrastructure, the challenges, and the innovative ideas implemented to overcome the challenges. The students got the opportunity to observe the Triage area, OPD, septic labour theatre, Sakhi—one-stop centre, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Kangaroo Mother Care Unit, Human Breast Milk Bank Unit, Postnatal Ward, Post-operative Ward, etc.
The warm hospitality extended by the team made the visit even more helpful and resulted in better learning outcomes for the students. The field visit has significantly enhanced the students’ understanding of women’s health and maternal and child health in particular and will undoubtedly contribute to the public health knowledge of MPH scholars. Dr. Edmond Fernandes and his team expressed their sincere gratitude to Dr. Durga Prasad and to the team at Lady Goschen Hospital for this opportunity.
